LONDON - Retired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher was airlifted to a hospital after colliding with a rock while skiing in the French Alps, officials told local media.
The 44-year-old German was wearing a helmet and his head injury was “not very serious,” Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, director of the Meribel resort, told RMC Sport.
"He dropped off-piste at Meribel. He was wearing a helmet and banged against a rock," Gernigon-Lecomte told the channel. "Emergency services responded quickly. He was airlifted and taken to hospital in Moutiers.”
The accident happened at about 11 a.m. local time (5 a.m.) ET, he said.
“He was shocked, a little shaken but conscious,” Gernigon-Lecomte said. “It may be a head injury but it is not very serious."
Schumacher, whose birthday is on Jan 3, is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 victories among his achievements, Reuters reported. He lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children.
